New mobile decontamination and disinfection system uses advanced dispersion technology

A new-generation mobile decontamination and disinfection system has been developed for applications that range from combating the spread of infectious diseases to neutralizing the effects of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

The high effectiveness of the Transportable Modular Aerosol-based Decontamination and Disinfection System (TransMADDS) against pathogenic germs was demonstrated during two major test campaigns by agencies of the British Ministry of Defense.

Unique to TransMADDS is the aerosol dispersion technology, which employs advanced fluid vaporization techniques.  Its minuscule droplets – sized at approximately 1 micrometer – allow the spraying agent to be transformed into a virtually gaseous state, ensuring optimum distribution.

Developed jointly by EADS and Pursuit Dynamics, TransMADDS is tailored to the dispersion of liquids for disinfecting inside rooms, facilities and installations.  The system not only ensures the highest possible application speed, but also requires the minimum quantity of disinfectant.   It can be deployed in civil emergencies for disinfecting hospitals and facilities in the event of a “superbug,” as well as during military missions for combating nuclear, biological or chemical contamination.

“Epidemics present a considerable danger to everybody,” explains Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defense Electronics, an integrated activity of EADS Defense & Security. “This disinfection system can make a substantial contribution to preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Therefore, our new product is an ideal example of how modern technologies can be used for increasing the safety of all of us in everyday life.”

In a typical application, a 39 x 23 x 10 foot room with a volume of approximately 8,830 cu. ft. can be completely treated within 60 seconds. This ensures quick and efficient disinfection of locations such as hospitals, schools, command sites and infrastructure facilities.

TransMADDS builds on EADS’ portfolio of mobile medical shelters and protection solutions, which range from first-aid rescue stations to complete field hospital medical systems, to deployable command posts and portable decontamination units.   Its offerings include the TransHospital® mobile hospital system – which is being evaluated by the U.S. Army for its Future Medical Shelter System (FMSS) requirement.
